NEXT TO NORMAL: The Thelonius Monk Story

Next to Normal: The Thelonius Monk Story will tackle the issues of mental illness as it relates to disparities in health care, police interaction, education, and social acceptance. Not only will we celebrate the musical genius of Thelonius Sphere Monk, but we will explore the pervasive misdiagnosis and discriminatory practices toward him and the societal stigma that plagued his career and continues to carry on in today’s society. We will also celebrate the importance of creative self-expression through the arts and how Monk stood firm to pursue his art without compromise.

On June 12, following the performance, Dr. Gerald Early, Chair of African and African-American Studies at Washington University, will give a talk and Q&A about the life and times of Thelonious Monk. Heather McDonnell, MSW, Outreach Specialist of NAMI-St. Louis will facilitate a panel discussion on living with and overcoming the challenges posed by mental illness.

GRAND CENTER THEATER CRAWL

A Call to Conscience will be performing Times a Getting Harder: Stories of the Great Migration for the Grand Center Theater Crawl, taking place June 28th and 29th of 2019.  The production will chronicle individual stories of hardship & triumph of African Americans’ burning desire to control their own destinies in the hostile environment of Jim Crow racism. They pulled up long planted roots leaving lives behind in the South and ventured north in search of opportunity and equality. The stories re-counted through narrative, music, and slides describe true accounts of both individual lives and collective experiences of people who participated in and witnessed the Great Migration firsthand.

Grandy Center Theater Crawl is free to the public.

We are pleased to announce the collaboration between A Call to Conscience, The Annie Malone Historical Society, and the Missouri History Museum’s performance of “Celebrating the Power of Dreams: The Annie Malone Story” attracted full houses on both Saturday and Sunday with Sunday being a standing room only!

We could not be more grateful of this accomplishment.  Sasha Turnbo, great granddaughter of Annie Malone, and Edna Smith, a Poro College Graduate, were in the attendance and were recognized, ecstatically, with applause.

Two on the Aisle gave a positive review of the production.
